02 The method Five steps, same every bike

How a bike gets shot

Bike product photography done the way a buyer inspects a bike: drive side first, then the parts that wear. Nothing here changes between a $300 commuter and a $6,000 race frame.

  1. Step 01 · Day of drop-off

    Intake and a wipe-down

    The bike comes in, we write the frame size, the serial and any damage on an intake card, and you sign it. That card is what we both refer to if there is ever a question about what state the bike arrived in.

    Then a dry wipe. Dust, cobwebs, the fingerprint on the top tube. We do not degrease a drivetrain or polish paint, because that changes what the buyer sees and it is not our bike to service. If it is filthy, we will call you before we shoot and you can collect it or pay for the extra half hour.

  2. Step 02 · Same afternoon

    The nine-angle plan

    Nine frames per bike. Drive side first, always. Then non-drive side, cockpit, drivetrain, front brake, rear brake, wheels with the tyre sidewall, the frame serial, and one scale shot.

    The order never changes. A shop with forty used bikes on its site ends up with forty sets that line up frame for frame, which is the whole point of bike photos for listing: a stranger comparing two bikes should be comparing bikes, not photographers.

  1. Step 03 · Under the north window

    Light, lens and camera height

    We shoot at 70mm from 4.2 metres back so a 56 cm frame still looks like a 56 cm frame. A wide lens up close turns wheels into eggs and makes a medium look like a large. Buyers notice, even when they cannot say why.

    Camera at hub height, 34 cm off the floor, for both profiles. Daylight from the north window, one strip light to lift the shadow side. No reflectors bounced into the paint, no gradient filters, no HDR merge. f/8 so the front and rear hubs are both sharp.

  2. Step 04 · Last two frames

    The serial and the scale frame

    Frame eight is the serial under the bottom bracket, lit flat so every character reads. Buyers ask for it. Stolen-bike registries ask for it. Sellers who leave it out get the message "can you send the serial" forty times.

    Frame nine is the whole bike with a one-metre folding rule on the floor in front of the wheels. It answers the question "will this fit me" better than a size sticker, and it stops an argument about wheel size before it starts.

  3. Step 05 · Two working days later

    Retouch rules and delivery

    Retouching removes dust and background. That is the full list, and it is written on the invoice. Scratches stay in. If the buyer finds one we hid, the bike comes back to you, not to us.

    You get a download link with two folders: 3000 px JPEGs for your shop or your own archive, and a 1600 px set sized for marketplaces. File names follow the frame order, so frame 01 is always the drive side. If a frame is soft or an angle is missing, we reshoot it free within 14 days under the reshoot guarantee.

Five services, one photographer for bike shops and sellers

Each has its own page section with the spec table and what you bring. The figure in mono is where the price starts. The real number comes in writing once we know the count and the address.

A typical used-bike job is one listing set at drop-off, $85, collected two working days later with the files already sent. A shop catalogue of 12 bikes at $65 per SKU comes to $780 before any pickup.

04 Where we draw the line

What we will not do

No HDR.Merged exposures make a matte frame look glossy and a faded decal look new. It reads fine on a phone for two seconds and then the buyer sees the bike in person. We shoot single exposures and light the shadow side instead.

No removal of wear.Scuffs, chips, a bent derailleur hanger, a worn saddle cover. They stay in the frame. The most common failure we see in used bike listing photos is a seller who cloned out one scratch, and the buyer who drove across town and found it. That bike goes back. We would rather you lose a lowball offer than a sale.

No drone.A bike is 1.8 metres long. Nothing about it gets clearer from forty metres up, and the permits and insurance would double the price of an on-location session for a frame nobody needs.

No model shoots.We do not cast riders, style them or direct lifestyle scenes. If you bring your own rider to an on-location session we will photograph them with the bike. Hiring and releasing models is a different trade, and a good one, just not ours.

No rain on location.Wet paint throws highlights we cannot control, water spots read as damage in a close-up, and the gear does not like it either. If the forecast turns, we move the date. No fee for moving it.

And no weddings, portraits for hire or real estate. Bikes and sports gear, nothing else. If that is not what you need, we are the wrong studio and will say so on the phone.

Our bookings person picks up from your home, shop or yard and brings the bike back after the shoot. Pickups are arranged by phone and the cost is written into your confirmed figure before anyone drives anywhere.

Past 25 miles we charge $0.70 per mile for the distance over the limit. San Marcos, Georgetown, Dripping Springs: all fine, all counted from Station Road on the shortest road route.
